In Canada, businesses that earn more than $30,000 in worldwide taxable revenue over four consecutive calendar quarters must register for and collect GST. But what if you haven't hit that threshold yet? Should you register voluntarily? Here is what Calgary business owners need to consider.
The Mandatory Registration Threshold
Once your total worldwide revenue from taxable supplies exceeds $30,000 in any four consecutive calendar quarters, you are no longer a "small supplier" and must register for GST. You then have 29 days to register and must begin collecting GST immediately. Note: the threshold is based on revenue, not profit.
When Voluntary Registration Makes Sense
Even if you're below $30,000, voluntary GST registration can be beneficial in several situations:
- You have significant startup expenses. If you're spending heavily on equipment, renovation, or inventory before your revenue ramps up, registering lets you claim Input Tax Credits (ITCs) on the GST you're paying — money back in your pocket.
- Your clients are other businesses. B2B clients expect to see GST on your invoices. Not having a GST number can make your business appear less established or professional.
- You're approaching the threshold. If you're close to $30,000, registering proactively avoids the scramble of retroactive registration and potential penalties.
When Staying Unregistered Makes Sense
If your customers are primarily consumers (not businesses) and your revenue is well below $30,000, staying unregistered keeps things simple. You don't charge GST, so your prices are effectively 5% lower than registered competitors — a small advantage in price-sensitive markets.
How to Register
Register online through CRA Business Registration Online or by calling CRA's business enquiries line. You'll receive a GST/HST account number. Choose your filing frequency (annual, quarterly, or monthly) based on your revenue level and preferences.
Common Mistakes
- Not tracking revenue against the $30,000 threshold
- Exceeding the threshold without registering — CRA can assess retroactive GST on sales that should have included tax
- Registering but not collecting GST — you are personally liable for the GST even if you didn't charge it
