QuickBooks Online and Xero are the two leading cloud accounting platforms for small businesses in Canada. Both are excellent tools, but they have different strengths. Here's an honest comparison to help you decide which is right for your Calgary business.
Market Share and Accountant Availability
QuickBooks Online dominates the Canadian market. Most bookkeepers and accountants in Calgary are proficient with QBO, which means you'll have an easier time finding professional support. Xero is growing rapidly, but QBO's ecosystem is still larger in Canada.
User Interface
Xero wins on design. Its interface is cleaner, more intuitive, and easier to navigate for non-accountants. QuickBooks Online has improved significantly in recent years but can still feel cluttered, especially for new users.
Bank Feeds
Both platforms connect to Canadian banks and automatically import transactions. QBO has slightly better coverage of Canadian financial institutions, but Xero covers all the major banks. Both allow CSV uploads as a backup.
Invoicing
Both offer professional invoicing with online payment options. QBO integrates natively with more Canadian payment processors. Xero's invoicing interface is slightly more customisable.
Payroll

QBO Simple Start begins around $22/month; Xero Starter begins around $17/month. Mid-tier plans are comparable. QBO's payroll add-on increases the cost gap. Both offer discounts for the first few months.
Our Recommendation
For most Calgary small businesses, we recommend QuickBooks Online. The larger accountant ecosystem, integrated payroll, and direct CRA filing make it the more practical choice in Canada. That said, if you're already on Xero and it's working well, there's no compelling reason to switch.
