How to Catch Up on Months of Missed Bookkeeping

It happens to the best of us. You launched your Calgary business with every intention of staying on top of your books, but then life happened — busy seasons, staffing challenges, or simply the daily grind of running a business. Step 1: Don't Panic

Step 3: Choose Your Tool

If you're using QuickBooks Online or Xero, you can connect your bank feeds and pull in historical transactions. If you've been working in spreadsheets, now might be the time to upgrade. Cloud accounting software makes catch-up work significantly faster.

Step 4: Categorise Systematically

Work through transactions month by month, starting with the oldest period. Categorise each transaction using a consistent chart of accounts. Focus on accuracy over speed — incorrect categorisation causes problems down the line.

Step 5: Reconcile Each Month

After categorising, reconcile each month's bank and credit-card statements. This ensures every dollar is accounted for and catches any missed or duplicated entries.

Step 6: File Overdue Returns

Once your books are current, you can prepare and file any overdue GST returns or tax returns. Filing late is always better than not filing at all — CRA penalties accumulate, so the sooner you file, the less you'll owe in interest and penalties.
