Calgary's construction and trades industry is booming, but many contractors are paying more tax than they need to. Whether you're a general contractor, electrician, plumber, or HVAC technician, here are five deductions you might be missing.
1. Vehicle Expenses
If you use your vehicle for work, you can deduct a portion of fuel, insurance, maintenance, and depreciation based on business-use percentage. The key is keeping a mileage log. CRA requires a record of business versus personal kilometres — without it, your claim won't survive an audit.
2. Home Office Deduction
Many contractors run their business from home — quoting jobs, handling invoices, and managing schedules from a home office. If you use a dedicated space regularly for business, you can deduct a proportionate share of rent or mortgage interest, utilities, property tax, and internet.
3. Tool and Equipment Depreciation
Large tool purchases and equipment aren't fully deductible in the year of purchase — they're depreciated over time using CCA (Capital Cost Allowance) classes. However, the Accelerated Investment Incentive allows you to claim a larger deduction in the first year. Many contractors miss this enhanced first-year write-off.
4. Training and Certification
Courses, certifications, safety training (like first aid or fall protection), and trade-school tuition are deductible if they relate to your current business. This includes travel costs to attend training courses outside Calgary.
5. Bad Debts
If a client hasn't paid you and you've exhausted reasonable collection efforts, you can write off the unpaid invoice as a bad debt. Many contractors simply absorb unpaid invoices without claiming the deduction. You can also recover the GST you remitted on that invoice.
