The 12 Craziest Write-Offs of 2024

June 24, 2025

You tried it… CRA denied it.

At Castle Accounting, we’ve seen our fair share of creative write-offs — and 2024 was a goldmine. Some were hilarious, some questionable, and some… well, let’s just say we had questions.

Here are 12 of the wildest things clients tried to expense — and why the CRA gave them a firm “nope.”

🏖️ A Stay at a Clothing-Optional Resort

Not that kind of “business trip.” Whatever the reason for the retreat — it’s not going to fly with the CRA.

🎟️ Movie Tickets & Concert Stubs

Entertaining clients? Maybe deductible. Taking yourself to that Taylor Swift show? Sorry — that's just a fun night out.

🧼 Leather Cleaning

White sofa? Biker gear? Cosplay gone rogue? Whatever it was, the CRA isn’t interested in your leather maintenance plan.

🍼 Diapers

We’ve seen some messy receipts… but this one’s more literal. Baby essentials, unfortunately, don’t count.

🐟 A Beta, a Hamster & a Kitty

We love pets too. But unless they’re on payroll, they’re not deductible — even if they boost morale.

🍻 U-Brew Beer Kegs

Homebrew may help you unwind, but unless you’re in the beer biz, those kegs are on your own tab.

🧱 Boxes of LEGO

Sure, they spark creativity — but unless you’re running a daycare or toy review channel, they won’t pass as business expenses.

💬 Marriage Counselling

Revenue Canada doesn’t do couples therapy. Even if your spouse drives you up the wall, this one’s personal — not professional.

👠 Purses, Clothes & Shoes

Unless it’s a legit uniform or PPE, your fashion finds don’t qualify — no matter how boardroom-ready they look.

💊 Birth Control Pills

Responsible? Yes. Tax-deductible? Nope. Health-related items like this don’t make the cut.

📦 Boxes of Tampons

We agree — it should be a write-off. Sadly, the CRA doesn’t think so. We’re rooting for the future.

🎞️ ‘Adult’ Movies

Let’s just say: there’s business… and then there’s “BUSINESS.” CRA doesn’t cover this category.

💡 A Friendly Reminder

Just because you have a receipt doesn’t mean it belongs in your books. When in doubt, check with your bookkeeper before your audit does.
