Payroll Made Simple — A Castle Bookkeeping Series for Canadian Small Businesses

October 7, 2025

Let’s Be Honest — Payroll Scares Most Business Owners

Hiring your first employee feels exciting… until it’s time to pay them.

Suddenly you’re juggling:

  • CRA payroll accounts
  • CPP, EI, and income tax deductions
  • Payday deadlines
  • Vacation pay
  • Year-end forms you’ve never even heard of

Sound familiar? You’re not alone.

Most small business owners don’t go wrong because they don’t care — they go wrong because no one ever taught them how payroll actually works.

The Real Problem: Payroll Isn’t Just “Cutting a Cheque”

In Canada, payroll is a system of moving parts:
Employees get paid
The CRA gets its remittances
You stay compliant and in control

Miss one of those and the penalties add up fast — sometimes literally overnight.

But when you understand the flow — how gross pay turns into net pay, how deductions work, when to remit, and what to track — payroll becomes predictable, not panic-inducing.

What This Series Covers

Over the next 15 parts, we’ll break down:

  • How to set up your payroll account properly
  • The difference between employees and contractors (and why it matters)
  • How to calculate payroll step-by-step
  • Vacation pay, stat holidays, and overtime
  • How to remit deductions to the CRA
  • The cleanest way to handle T4s, ROEs, and year-end

We’ll also share practical tips on choosing software, paying yourself, and scaling up without losing control.

Who It’s For

This series is for:

  • Sole proprietors hiring their first team member
  • Small corporations paying staff or contractors
  • Business owners tired of stressing over CRA deadlines
  • Anyone who wants to understand payroll instead of outsourcing it blindly

Whether you use Wagepoint, QuickBooks, or just want to get the basics right — this series will give you the confidence to manage payroll properly.

Final Word

At Castle Bookkeeping, we’ve seen payroll chaos in every form — late filings, wrong deductions, missing records.
And we’ve seen how quickly clarity turns everything around.

Once you know how the system works, payroll stops being scary and starts being simple.
