CRA Can’t Audit What You Can’t Explain

July 21, 2025

Every dollar you write off should come with a story.
The CRA doesn’t just want proof you spent the money — they want to know why.

Let’s be clear:
📄 A receipt is not enough on its own.
You need a business reason behind every expense — one that actually makes sense if someone asks about it two years from now.

Some examples:

$200 dinner? Who were you with? What client? What did you talk about — the weather or a potential deal?
$400 flight? Was it for a conference, a client visit, or just a well-timed “business trip” to Cancun?
$700 camera? Was it for creating marketing content, or did you just want crisper vacation photos?

It’s not about being sneaky.
It’s about being able to connect the dots between the money you spent and the business you’re running.

💡 Audit-proof rule of thumb:
If you’d feel awkward explaining it to a CRA agent, it probably isn’t a true business expense.
And if you can’t remember what it was for — forget it. That write-off won’t hold.

Best practice?
Keep notes.
Save email confirmations.
Use your bookkeeping software to attach context right to the expense.

Because when it comes to CRA audits, paper trails are good — but clarity is better.
